Oceanique in Evanston is Getting New Look and Menu for 25th Anniversary

Running a much-acclaimed French American fine-dining restaurant for more than twenty-five years is no feat to scoff at, but Chef/Owner Mark Grosz and his wife/partner Renée André aren't stopping now. Celebrating the restaurant’s 25th anniversary this summer, they have recently renewed the lease on the quaint Oceanique space in the heart of Evanston, Illinois (505 Main Street, 847-864-3425) for another 10 years and plans are underway to renovate the space this summer, taking our annual 3-week vacation in July and re-opening at the end of July with new menu items and new look.

Oceanique continues garner acclaim as one of the area’s best restaurants and is a popular North Shore dining destination. Since 1993, Oceanique has been ranked as the number one seafood restaurant in the Chicago metropolitan area by the prestigious Zagat Guide.

"Many of the changes will be substantial; we are going to put in place a more contemporary look without losing the intimacy and comfortable atmosphere that has made Oceanique popular with a large and loyal following," said Grosz. "In fact, we are going from 88 seats to 68 seats to provide for more room and comfort and we are adding four banquettes. Our new menu also will highlight our excellent wine program that is led by Wine Director (and son) Philippe André. A brand new bar will come along with new chairs and tables, as well as a new menu of artisan cocktails, craft beers and small plate dishes."

Grosz has engaged the design team headed by Paul Kozlowski and Taylor Williams of D+K Architects to oversee the design changes. Floor and ceiling treatments are planned along with a state of the art lighting system that imbues the space with warmth and charm while showcasing Chef Grosz’s glowing seasonal dishes. A row of banquette seating will be placed along the wall of one of the main dining rooms to accommodate large tables while still offering lavish seating.

Along with the physical changes, Chef Grosz will introduce new menus, one specifically for the bar area to appeal to those looking to enjoy a brand new seasonally focused cocktail program and lighter bites. Featured on this menu will be the signature Maine Lobster Brioche sandwich with saffron-togarashi aioli.

A rebuilt seven-course degustation menu will take Oceanique into the next era of its culinary
Roasted Oysters
history with dishes like Virginia Misty Point Oysters roasted with Pernod, spinach and parmesan. Also featured will be Pennsylvania’s Elysian Field Farm’s lamb T-bone, grilled with heirloom tomatoes. An abundance of wonderfully blended fresh local herbs and vegetables will make their way onto the Summer and Fall menus.

The renovations won't happen until Oceanique takes its annual summer break during the first half of July, but in the meantime, Chef Grosz is not letting up, featuring his seven-course Spring degustation menu. Highlights include day boat sea scallops with house made kimchi, Spanish Turbot with lemongrass, and locally raised duck leg confit with kumquats and Hudson Valley foie gras.

Wine Director André has updated his pairings to reflect the sway of the seasons, featuring an exotic yet playful Hungarian dry Furmint and the elegant sophistication of a tenured single vineyard red burgundy.

Barramundi
"Over the years, our wine program has become more than an addition to the Oceanique experience but rather, a beautiful companion to our fine cuisine," says Wine Director Andre. "Our wine cellar contains a wide spectrum of varietal offerings with an outstanding collection of rare Champagne, Burgundy and Bordeaux. Oceanique’s cellar not only holds some 700 selections at a precise 57° and 64% humidity, it strives to offer something special for every dish, every person, and every occasion."

Oceanique has won Wine Spectator Magazine’s coveted "Best of Award of Excellence" every year since 1993. This year, Wine Spectator recognized Oceanique as having one of the 750 best wine lists in the world. Even with this acclaim, guests find the wine service at Oceanique to be very knowledgeable, yet refreshingly gracious and down to earth.
More information about the 25th anniversary celebration at Oceanique will be made available during the coming weeks.

Oceanique serves dinner from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Monday-Thursday and from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The restaurant is closed on Sundays. For more information or to make reservations, please contact Oceanique at 847-864-3435 or visit the website at www.oceanique.com.

Thursday, June 27 Rush Hour Music With Lee Barrie at the Chicago French Market

Thursday, June 27 Rush Hour Music – Lee Barrie
4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Complimentary

Lee Alec Barrie is a contemporary jazz guitarist whose style has been compared to Larry Carlton,
Chuck Loeb and other popular contemporary jazz guitarists.  Barrie was professional by age 14, starting out with a teenage rock band, playing Beatles, Beach Boys and Chuck Berry tunes plus some classic R&B.

These early musical relationships lasted well into his twenties and he had the privilege of recording with Lipps Inc., a Minneapolis-based band best known most for its number one hit “Funkytown” in the late 70’s. Barrie’s evolution as a guitarist was accelerated when he began to experiment with a Roland guitar synthesizer, which allows his electric guitar to take on the sound of a wide range of instruments. He now has the opportunity to solo as a saxophonist, flutist, organist, violinist and many others, all while playing on the guitar. He chooses the instrument based on the style and mood of the song.

Barrie’s idea for a “virtual band project”—whereby he plays solo over his pre-recorded jazz backing tracks—evolved naturally. Having taken a break from professional performances for a number of years, he became a self-taught jazz pianist, which gave him the technical and musical skills to arrange and record his own instrumental backing tracks at his home recording studio.

A rush hour featuring the live music of Lee Alec Barrie, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. June 27 is sure to be an energizing and memorable experience.

Little Goat Bread Opening June 7 at Chicago French Market!

On Friday, June 7, Chef Stephanie Izard will bring Little Goat Bread to the Chicago French Market. This marks the first time Izard is expanding Little Goat Bread beyond the walls of her newly opened West Loop diner Little Goat to serve downtown Chicago.

Little Goat Bread in the Chicago French Market will serve breads in the morning, soup and sandwiches for lunch and freshly roasted Stumptown drip coffee throughout the day. Just like the West Loop location, Little Goat Bread will sell loaves of its artisan breads for take home, including baguettes and a sampling of breads available on the menu at Girl & the Goat, Izard’s award-winning restaurant also located in the West Loop.
The 22-foot booth will be located between Chef John des Rosiers' Wisma and Food Network Sandwich King-featured Fumare Meats. It will have a similar look and feel to the warm and rustic vibe of Little Goat Bread West Loop location attached to Little Goat Diner.
"I’m excited to join other Chicago stand-outs like Lillie's Q, Saigon Sisters, Beavers Donuts, Pastoral in the culinary lineup at the Chicago French Market,” said Stephanie Izard, chef and owner.  “With so many of our clients working in the Loop and commuting on Metra, it will be nice to offer them our freshly baked goods, soups and sandwiches to take to their offices during the week or to take home in the evening, as well as to provide our unique products for breakfast, lunch and dinner at the market.”
In addition to all ready-to-eat items, Izard have her new product line, “The Flavor, by Stephanie Izard,” available for purchase. This unique blends of sauces and rubs is intended to help busy home cooks bring Stephanie’s “make your whole mouth happy” philosophy to life in their own kitchens, providing an aid to create dishes that are the right balance of savory, sweet, salty and even a little spicy. Three sauces, including The Marinade, The Sauté and The Chee, and two rubs, Rub 1 and Rub 2, will be available at the Chicago French Market.
Chicago French Market is the first and only year-round, indoor marketplace that provides access to local artisans and purveyors.  Each retailer located in the market offers fresh selections for cooking at home, dining on premise or taking food to go.  With the addition of Little Goat Bread, the market now features 31 unique individual vendors.

Figue Mediterranean hosts Launch Preview of the all-new 2014 Jaguar F-Type Roadster on Friday, June 7

May 23, 2013 (La Quinta, CA)-Figue Mediterranean (47-474 Washington St., La Quinta; 760-698-9040) has joined forces with Desert European Motorcars (71-387 Highway 111, Rancho Mirage, CA 92270; 760-773-5000) to host a special preview of the all-new 2014 Jaguar F-Type Roadster at a cocktail reception 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, June 7.  This will be the first opportunity for area residents to get a preview look at the new F-Type, which officially launches nationwide the week of June 6.

"We believe that our guests and luxury car enthusiasts have a lot in common, including a passion for great style and fine taste," said Lee Morcus, owner of Figue. "With the F-Type Roadster, we also share the common element of being true to tradition on one hand and cutting edge on the other. At Figue, we're proud to say we're changing the way people of the Palm Springs area enjoy exciting food and wine, while the F-Type Roadster is Jaguar's first truly new sports car in 50 years-and it's been getting stunning reviews. It makes perfect sense to combine the two into one fun and delicious event."
"The purity and elegance of the Jaguar F-Type design gives the F-Type lasting beauty. The proportions and stance communicate muscularity and latent energy. High power and low weight means effortless speed. Truly breathtaking," says David Murphy, president of Jaguar Rancho Mirage/Desert European Motorcars.
At the Jaguar long lead press launch last fall, Car & Driver reported, " The F-type revealed its cunning on the Navarra Circuit in Spain and while attacking the Pyrenean foothills. After living with the comeback cat for a couple of days, we are certain this is not the reprise of your uncle's vintage sports car or an abridged version of the Jaguar cruisers battling the luxury German juggernaut. Rather, the F-type is a feline bred with a wild streak and a feral yearning to meet or beat Porsche's best moves."
"We cast one unanimous ballot for the F-Type for top honors in Paris. We were simply taken with the style, the performance potential, and the heritage," said Autoweek.com at the Paris Auto Show in October.
See for yourself at Figue Mediterranean on June 7. For information and reservations, contact Diana Marlo at Diana@deserteuropean.com or call 760-773-5000.
