The highly anticipated opening of the restaurant and adjoining Mayne Stage is an energizing addition to this north side community.
Executive Chef Jimmy Madla plans a unique menu of comfort foods and innovative items at the 100-seat Act One Café. Madla has been a prominent figure on Chicago’s culinary scene for nearly two decades working in various kitchens before opening his own highly successful restaurant, Coobah, in 2002.
Act One Café provides him a second outlet to create an entirely different menu with the assistance of his culinary team.
“The New American cuisine at Act One Café honors the melting pot of flavors that make eating and cooking so much fun,” says Madla, who has combined traditional techniques with creative twists in developing the menu.

The restaurant is open for dinner nightly except Monday and features an elaborate brunch buffet on weekends. Entrees range from $7- $20.
Appetizer selections include Seared Scallops, with garlic-brown butter sauce and herbed brioche crumble; Veggie Tater Tots, made with zucchini, red pepper and olive with whipped goat cheese; and Crispy Spring Rolls, filled with spicy jerked chicken, caramelized plantain and cabbage.
Entrée options include Berkshire Pork French Dip, slow roasted for seven hours, sliced thin and served on a Highland Bakery French roll with natural jus and very hot house-made mustard; Bistro Steak, Dietzler Farm 10 oz. hangar steak with Act One steak sauce and classic mashed potatoes; and Seafood “Booyah,” with shrimp, scallops, calamari, Fresno chili and black beans in a saffron-tomato broth.
Desserts are a welcome finale, with selections like Malted Chocolate Pot au Crème, Turbinado sugar brulée, brandied Chantilly and vanilla tuile; and Bread Pudding, white chocolate and pistachios with “Manhattan” hard sauce.
“Act One Café is the perfect place to join friends for a relaxing evening with great food and drinks any night of the week and for brunch on weekends,” says Madla. “It’s also ideal for cocktails and dining before or after performances at Mayne Stage.”

Bertrand Delanoë, Mayor of Paris, Visits Chicago French Market
The Honorable Bertrand Delanoë, Mayor of Paris, Paris Deputy Mayor Pierre Schapira and Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley attended a private reception in their honor at Chicago French Market (131 N. Clinton St.; 312-575-0306) at MetraMarket yesterday (Tuesday, April 27). It marked Delanoë’s first ever trip to Chicago.
Nearly 300 people attended the event, including notable Chicagoans Bill Kurtis and Donna LaPietra. Other Paris and Chicago officials were present, including Renee Johnson and Brett August of the Paris Committee of Chicago Sister Cities, and Sidy Diallow, acting consul general of France in Chicago.
Kurtis introduced Mayor Delanoë who, speaking in French, thanked the city of Chicago for its hospitality and praised Chicago’s beauty. Kurtis then joked, “For those of you who don’t speak French, Mayor Delanoë just declared his candidacy for Mayor of Chicago,” which received laughs. Later, Mayor Daley spoke of his admiration for Paris and how he is always inspired by the City of Light.
The cocktail reception at Chicago French Market was hosted by its owners, the Bensidoun family of Paris, represented by Sebastien and Pascal Bensidoun; and U.S. Equities Realty represented by Robert A. Wislow and Camille P. Julmy. Other hosts included the Paris Committee of Chicago Sister Cities and the Consulate General of France in Chicago.
Chicago French Market is owned and developed by the Bensidoun family, who also owns and operates numerous similar markets throughout France and in several of Chicago’s suburbs.
“Chicago French Market proudly partnered with the Paris Committee of Chicago Sister Cities and the Consulate General of France in Chicago to welcome the honorable Bertrand Delanoë on his first visit to the Windy City,” said Sebastien Bensidoun of the Bensidoun family. “This event successfully brought together prominent Americans and members of the French community in the heart of Chicago’s first indoor, year-round market.”
Chicago French Market is a European-inspired market offering an array of local produce, meats, seafood, breads, pastries, cheese and wine, chocolates, pastas, artisan-made goods, flowers and a seating area for customers. Chicago French Market’s 30 vendors stay open year-round, six days per week, and is located within the new MetraMarket development at 131 N. Clinton St. (between Washington and Randolph Streets). About A Silver Lining Foundation
Since the Buy A Mom A Mammogram program's inception in 2006, ASLF has provided more than 2,500 women with information about and access to no cost screening mammograms. In response to the growing number of women needing follow up due to a possible abnormality, the foundation began funding diagnostic testing in 2007. Since its launch in 2002, ASLF has provided more than 450,000 people with information about cancer resources, treatment options and support services. Through the organization's programs, services and personal support, the foundation strives to provide opportunities for medically underserved people affected by cancer.
The philosophy of the foundation is based on two phrases Dr. Goldberg's late mother used to live by: “No matter what your situation, you have to see the silver lining,” and “We are all family, and we have to help each other through the tough times.” With 50 million Americans currently living without health insurance, the Buy A Mom A Mammogram program provides a silver lining to those in need.
ASLF’s administrative offices are located at 134 N. LaSalle, Ste. 1218, Chicago, 60602. The organization runs three cancer related programs: Buy A Mom A Mammogram , the Chicagoland Cancer Information Coalition (CCIC) and The Evelyn Goldberg Center at the University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago. U.S. Equities Helps Grow Community Supported Agriculture Programs in Chicago's Suburbs
Access to locally grown produce has never been so convenient – especially for Illinois Tollway users. Beginning this summer, boxes of seasonal, local produce will be delivered weekly to Illinois Tollway Oases participating in a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. Membership sign-up runs now through mid-May.
CSA programs traditionally drop off produce for residents in dense urban neighborhoods but have a harder time serving suburban communities. Through an innovative collaboration between Oases property manager, U.S. Equities Asset Management, the Illinois Tollway, and three area farmers, suburban residents and commuters can now enjoy easy access to their share of the crop every Wednesday throughout the summer at area Illinois Tollway Oases.
“U.S. Equities is thrilled to help extend the reach of local CSA farms and create new and innovative uses for the Tollway Oases,” said Sundee Wislow, Director of Sustainability at U.S. Equities. “This program grants commuters a convenient way to support sustainable agriculture and helps remove barriers that CSA farms face in reaching consumers. The idea came out of our sustainability work which initially focused on energy and water conservation.”
Building on the sustainability work at Oases facilities, U.S. Equities is creating new drop off locations at six Oases for bountiful boxes of fresh, local produce from Harvest Moon Farms, Scotch Hill Farm and Triple A Farms. By becoming CSA program members, Tollway drivers support the farms by committing to buy fruits, vegetables and other farm products before the growing season, and then enjoy the bounty of the farm as weekly produce deliveries arrive.
“The Illinois Tollway welcomes this resourceful strategy to connect farmers with local consumers and help support the communities around each Oasis,” said Illinois Tollway Board Director Tom Weisner, who chairs the Tollway Oases Working Group. “We support U.S. Equities’ continuing efforts to look for new ways to better serve our customers - whether they are commuters on their way to work or families living in the neighboring communities."
CSA programs are member-based in that members purchase a “share” of the farm’s produce for a season. A share usually consists of a box of fruits or vegetables, but other farm products may be included. Members are required to pick up their box of produce each week throughout the farming season. To participate in the CSA program through the Illinois Tollway Oases, customers can sign up for shares directly with the farm supporting the Oases of their choice.
“Though we have demand from individuals throughout the suburbs, memberships lack the density that our city drop off locations provide and we continually struggled to find that perfect suburban location that will provide enough members to make a drop off location successful,” said Tony Ends of Scotch Hill Farm. “With hundreds of thousands of commuters driving under the Tollway Oases each day, we can reach many without having to establish a drop off location in each suburb – it’s really a win-win for everyone.”
“In addition to each week’s crops, we try to provide ideas and experiences to people through the produce we grow,” said Bob Borchardt of Harvest Moon Farms. “Each week’s crops come with savory recipes for both the novice and expert cooks to enjoy.”

About Harvest Moon Farms
Harvest Moon is a 20-acre certified organic farm in west central Wisconsin's driftless region on the South fork of the Bad Axe River. The land is incredibly fertile and high in natural organic matter, which means the tastiest, most nutritious food grows here.
In 2009 the farm formed Harvest Moon Farms Producers Guild. Its guild is comprised of six area farms growing certified organic and certified naturally grown produce. Creating the Guild helps better serve Harvest Moon’s clients and CSA shareholders by offering larger quantities and more varieties. It also serves the farms by allowing shared resources and collaborates on transportation and distribution, which in turn reduces our collective carbon footprint. For more information, visit http://www.harvestmoonorganics.com/.
About Scotch Hill Farm
Scotch Hill Farm is a diversified family farm with certified organic crops in Southern Wisconsin. The farm has operated a CSA since 1994, growing from 5 members the first season to 215 in 2009. Scotch Hill plans to serve 300 households in 2010. The farm offers 20-week subscriptions, fall shares and flower shares. In 2010, the farm has 41 acres in certified organic vegetable and field crop production. Deliveries to the Chicago area are done with a hybrid SUV and trailer. For more information, visit http://www.scotchhillfarm.com/.
About Triple A Farms
In 1998, at ages 13, 10 and 6 the DeGroot brothers: Andrew, Adam, Aaron, partnered together to try their hand at business. The brothers had a great introduction from their father & uncle – brothers who as partners operated the family farm in St. Anne, IL, roughly 60 miles south of Chicago. The three of them began selling vegetables from the farm at a new nearby farmer’s market in Kankakee. Since then the number of markets where they distribute their produce has grown and they continue looking for additional ways to get the harvest of St. Anne to the tables of the citizens of Chicago. More information at http://www.tripleavegetables.com/.

A Silver Lining Foundation Receives Grant from Komen Chicago Affiliate
The Chicagoland Area Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has awarded a $75,000 grant to A Silver Lining Foundation (ASLF) to provide underinsured and uninsured patients with information concerning cancer resources, treatment options and support services, funds no cost mammograms, and sponsors community outreach health fairs providing multiple health screenings.
At ASLF, the grant from Komen for the Cure will support ASLF’s Buy A Mom A Mammogram™ program, an initiative to fund screening mammograms and diagnostic evaluation services for Chicago’s underserved community. The program will also support the creation of an additional community outreach health fair hosted by ASLF.
“It’s an honor to be recognized from such a distinguished organization as the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, which has a mission so similar to that of A Silver Lining Foundation,” said ASLF founder and breast cancer survivor Dr. Sandy Goldberg. “We are grateful for the support of the foundation, and with this grant, we hope to continue our mission to ensure dignified, respectful and equal access to quality cancer education and services for all.”
Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest breast cancer organization, and the Chicagoland Affiliate is one of 125 Affiliates on the front lines dedicated to ending breast cancer in their communities. Komen Affiliates fund innovative programs that help women and men overcome the cultural, social, education and financial barriers to breast cancer screening and treatment.
“At the Chicagoland Area Affiliate of Komen, we conducted a needs assessment of our community and discovered ASLF’s Buy A Mom A Mammogram program,” said executive director Michael Ziener. “We are confident that through ASLF’s Buy A Mom A Mammogram, uninsured and underinsured patients will have access to the care they need.”
For more information on A Silver Lining Foundation, please call (312) 345-1322 or visit http://www.asilverliningfoundation.org/.
