Suburban Life features Pappadeaux in Today's On the Go

Reprint from Today's Suburban Life: Renee Tomell's Blog-Taste of the Town On the Go
Taste of the Town:
Dixieland delight at Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen

Submitted by Renee Tomell on October 23, 2009 - 12:11pm

A piece of New Orleans’ French Quarter has been transplanted to the prairie at Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen.

“Coastal seafood” describes the menu’s emphasis, says David Jarvis, the restaurant’s research and development chef. He notes Cajun favorites are featured, but so are eclectic offerings for varied palates.

Live lobster inhabit a tank at the entrance. A nautical theme carries through to the lively decor, which includes mounted fish representing many of the varieties on the menu. The tin ceiling and other architectural touches were brought in from New Orleans for the Westmont location, whose spacious dining room has landscaped garden views. Mementos paying homage to Louisiana adorn the attractive brick walls.

David Jarvis, research and development chef, puts the finishing touches on the Tuna Tambour at Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen in Westmont. A second location is in Arlington Heights.

On Friday and Saturday evenings, a Zydeco band strolls among the tables. “They’ll do requests for certain songs,” says Manager Peder Clausen, noting the ambiance is lively.

He says the privately held parent company is focused on bringing value to the table. In addition to promotions on lobster and oyster dishes, diners will be offered new choices in serving sizes.

“The food is fresh — it’s great and the service is outstanding,” says Dr. George Engel of Big Rock, adding that he and his family frequent the restaurant for lunch or dinner whenever they’re in the area. “We wouldn’t go anyplace else.”

A fan of Cajun cooking, Engel says he’s looking forward to the boiled crawfish offered around Mardi Gras, but adds his regular favorites are the Crawfish Etouffee in lemon garlic butter sauce, and the Blackened Catfish on Dirty Rice.

Crowne Plaza Glen Ellyn Receives 2009 Green Initiative Award

The DuPage Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) awarded the Crowne Plaza Glen Ellyn-Lombard (1250 Roosevelt Rd., Glen Ellyn; 630-629-6000) the 2009 Green Initiative Award, accepted by the hotel at the DuPage CVB's 20th Anniversary Annual Meeting & Luncheon at noon Friday, October 2 the Eaglewood Resort & Spa in Itasca, Ill. The bureau recognized the hotel's environmental commitment, including sustainable programs like guest recycling, insulated low-E glass windows and energy-reducing boilers. The committee also acknowledged the hotel's adjacent restaurant, Glen Prairie, serving locally-sourced, seasonable fare from local farmer's markets.

At the event, DuPage CVB's executive director, Skip Strittmatter, presented the award at the luncheon in front of an audience of 275 people, all members, partners and supporters of the bureau. The Crowne Plaza's general manager, Kim Wicker, and director of sales Diana Dowdy accepted the award on behalf of the hotel.

"We are honored and delighted to accept this award from the Dupage Convention and Visitors Bureau," said Wicker. "The Crowne Plaza Glen Ellyn-Lombard has strived to offer a 'green' alternative to our guests, and we are grateful to accept this award for our efforts."

The Crowne Plaza Glen Ellyn-Lombard opened in August 2008 as the first "green" Crowne Plaza in the Chicago area. The hotel's linen reuse program, use of regional vendors, hybrid transportation, CFL light bulbs and more, make it an environmentally conscious property. Daniel Ovanin, executive chef of Glen Prairie, makes three visits weekly to local farmer's markets to source the freshest ingredients for the restaurant. The restaurant also promotes sustainability and "green" living by using recycled paper for its menus and employing only 100% compostable and biodegradable materials for its take-out supplies. This is the first award from the DuPage CVB for the hotel.

A Silver Lining Foundation Receives $25,000 Donation from Jewel-Osco

A Silver Lining Foundation (ASLF) raised more than $170,000 this past Saturday, October 3 at the fifth annual A Sterling Event, the foundation's an annual black-tie gala at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place. Founded by breast cancer survivor and NBCChicago nutrition expert Dr. Sandy Goldberg, ASLF provides breast cancer resources, including treatment options and support services, to uninsured and underinsured patients.

During the gala, Jewel-Osco president Keith Nielsen was presented with the Evy Award, in recognition of Jewel-Osco’s contributions to ASLF and for perpetuating the legacy of Goldberg's late mother Evelyn “Evy” Goldberg. The Evy Award is given each year to an individual who lives by Evelyn Goldberg’s philosophy that, “We are all family and we have to help each other through the tough times.”

Nielsen then presented Goldberg with a $25,000 check on behalf of Jewel-Osco to support the programs of ASLF. Jewel-Osco has supported ASLF in the past by holding events to pre-qualify women in Jewel-Osco stores for no-cost screening mammograms and through generous contributions to ASLF’s Buy A Mom A Mammogram™ program, which funds the mammograms.

“In his unwavering support of A Silver Lining, Keith has honored the philosophy that my mother lived by, and we are thrilled to work with him and Jewel-Osco,” Goldberg said after the check presentation. “

Jewel-Osco’s continued support is appreciated not only by us at A Silver Lining, but by the thousands of patients we have helped in the past and will help in the future.”Underwritten by Robert and Barbara Sherman for the fourth consecutive year, 100 percent of funds raised at the gala, including proceeds from the live auction and silent auction and check from Jewel-Osco, will support ASLF’s three programs.

The event drew 300 guests, who enjoyed passed appetizers and cocktails, a live auction and silent auction, vocal stylings of famed cabaret singer Nan Mason, the beats of Rhythym City and the hosting duo of KISS-FM’s Ty Bentli and NBC-5’s Ginger Zee.

The energetic live auction was one of the best live auctions in recent Chicago history, led by noted professional auctioneer David Goodman and raising more than $60,000. Coveted packages included once in a lifetime opportunities, like a five-night trip to Hawaii with airfare included; a trip for two to New York’s Spring 2010 Fashion Week; a chauffeur-driven outing to a taping of the “Oprah Winfrey Show,” followed by a private shopping trip at Bloomingdale’s; and a New Year’s trip to a private Tuscan farmhouse in Cortona, Italy.
