Upcoming Performances and Events Announced at Mayne Stage

Mayne Stage (1328 W. Morse Ave., Chicago) adds more events to its well-rounded performance lineup including Swississippi Records, October 3; Vikings vs. Packers Party, October 24; Ross Johnson, October 30; The Giving Tree Band, November 6, and Fareed Haque, November 20. Swississippi Records, October 3
Swississippi Records, a new Chicago-based blues label, hosts Triple-Play CD Release Party at Mayne Stage Sunday, October 3 at 8:30 p.m.

The brains of the Swississippi Records operation, CEO Chris Harper and General Manager Dave Katzman, see their company as a bold venture into the world of the blues, music whose steady roots and ever-changing vision continues to be heard and praised across the globe. Launched on September 21, Swississippi Records plans to sign individuals and bands in the blues genre that have that little extra something. They want artists that have their own style and are contributors to the future of blues music.

The CDs released on October 3 include: Swississippi’s Chris Harper, Willie ‘Big Eyes’ Smith, Jimmy Burns, Bob Stroger and others’ 4 Aces and a Harp, Rob Blaine’s Big Otis Blues and Peaches Staten & The Groove Shakers’ Live at Legends. Live performances by Chris Harper, Rob Blaine and Peaches Staten will top off the event.

Vikings vs. Packers Party, October 24
Watch the Minnesota Vikings take on the Green Bay Packers for a thrilling Sunday night football game on October 24 at Mayne Stage. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Come cheer on the teams and watch touchdowns scored at Lambeau Field on a larger than life, 22-foot high definition screen. Tickets cost $12 in advance or $15 at the door and include a full football buffet starting at 6:30 p.m. with buffalo and barbeque wings, barbeque baby back ribs, chili, nachos, crudités and lobster macaroni and cheese. Drink specials for the game are $3 Miller Lites, $5 Jack and Coke and $5 Southern Comfort and Coke.

Ross Johnson, October 30
Ross Johnson, magician and psychic extraordinaire, brings his unique array of gifts to Mayne Stage Saturday, October 30 at 8 p.m. for Halloween: Enigmas and Perplexities with Psychic Ross Johnson.

Johnson is a perceptive performer accomplished in many different aspects of magic including mind reading, fortune telling and telepathy. He brings more than 20 years of experience to the table along with a professional appearance and masterful showmanship skills. In 1988, he won the award for Distinguished Professionalism in the Performance of Mentalism by the International Psychic Entertainers Association.

Johnson boasts of interactive performances at many Fortune 500 companies such as Hewlett-Packard, General Motors, IBM and General Electric. He travels across the country to different locations to showcase his talents in the psychic arts and turn skeptics into believers. Based in the greater Chicago area, Johnson comes to Mayne Stage to perform a special Halloween event.

The Giving Tree Band, November 6
Enjoy music by folk rock group, The Giving Tree Band, at Mayne Stage on November 6 at 8 p.m.

Brothers Todd and Eric Fink joined forces to make The Giving Tree Band, influenced mainly by their genealogy, in 2004. They celebrate a direct relation to Mike Fink, the legendary folk artist known for his exploits on the Mississippi River. Since then the band has grown to include other artists.

The band prides itself on being “The Greenest Band In The Land” according to Mother Earth News, touring in a bio-diesel van and releasing carbon neutral records. They live an environmentally green lifestyle and spread the word through their performances.

Fareed Haque, November 20
Fareed Haque, guitar virtuoso, reveals his new project, “Math Games”, at a performance at Mayne Stage Saturday, November 20 at 8:30 p.m.

Fareed Haque’s music spans a wider spectrum than the typical guitarist, playing all styles from Classical to Spanish, and American Jazz and Funk. He easily moves between jazz and classical idioms, and he has become an in-demand artist, performing with prominent jazz, rock and classical artists such as Sting, Dizzy Gillespie, Paquito D'Rivera and Dave Holland. Fareed has released seven recordings as a leader: Voices Rising and Manresa on Sting's Pangaea label, and Sacred Addiction, Opaque and Déjà Vu, on the prestigious Bluenote label, as well as Singh Song available on Haven Records.

Fareed has been featured on WTTW's ArtBeat, Ben Sidran's New Visions, Michelob Presents Sunday Night with David Sanborn on NBC, his own Lonesome Pines Special for PBS, and on BET cable jazz channel. In 1989, he joined the faculty of Northern Illinois University, where he currently holds an associate professorship in jazz and classical guitar studies.

Another opening act for The Giving Tree Band on November 6 is Thrift Store Cowboys.
